summer changes...

an update after 10 days is appropriate...the greatest joy as an update is that my wife absolutely loves her job at the UM church. They are an incredible congregation to say the least!

We received a free car (you should shudder right now), and used it for a few miles when major problems happened and we dumped $650 into it...thinking it would be worth it to get us through for a little while. The next day it croaked!!! Can you believe it? So Chad has been car shopping--the idea of it is real fun but the reality is that buying a used car is a crap shoot, and rather expensive at that. We are settling on a Honda Civic for the mileage and the relative good looks of the car. I pray it does not cause us any trouble!

I am leading an ecumenical worship service Sunday morning at the Ellsworth Cheese Curd Festival and running the 10K race for it on Saturday. We have booked a Blue Grass band to play for the service so it should be a blast.

I have also spent this week and will next week up at camp with kids. It is fun to reconnect with a bible camp. After seminary I have a bit of a different lens to look at things through. I am not impressed how little they use their bibles...or read scripture at all. I also wish they would not just pray for "god to let us have a good week, and god thanks for nature to play in, and thanks for good friends." THen I realize that I did the same thing and I calm down a bit...

Peace to your week.

Hey Kohly,

Great to read from you. We also have had to look for another car since my Saturn was on its way out...we found a nice Hyundai though- good luck on that venture.....

I know what you mean about camp- but I also know I was one of them and probably was even worse!

just got back from bible camp myself with our confirmation kids. i thought the camp was really well run and the staff was upbeat and good.

i thought the bible studies they did were pretty good, and they did use scripture pretty well, but i know what you mean about the prayers. they can be a bit shallow.

which camps do you all go to? we went to Pine Lake which is a crossways camp. they (the three camps) have an overall director who is a luther seminary grad which i think helps keep the theology on a little higher plane.

hope you are having a great summer.

my car has been doing stupid stuff, but of course it only happens in my garage and not in the shop, so the mechanic thinks we're crazy.

my church does not have a tradition of confirmation camp, which makes me a little sad, but i understand the reason is that no one has stepped up to say they'll go every year. so, if i want it to happen, i guess i'll have to start doing it myself. hmm. maybe one more year until i feel like i have my feet underneath me.

i was definitely one of those counselors who did not do the bible studies justice, but part of it rested in the staff training (or lack thereof) that we had. we talked plenty about sexual harassment, mandatory reporting, boater safety and cpr, but i don't remember having time with a pastor to talk about the importance of the scripture passages and/or themes for the weeks. that probably would have helped.

maybe your next call could be at one of those camps to do that; wouldn't that be fun?
