Honored
I feel so blessed and honored for two reasons this evening--both very different. Both deal with the past couple of days. I presided at a baptism this morning--a first for me as far as I know. It was really special. I started with a children's message and then the kids stayed for the baptism. I had to ask a few of them to step back because they were playing in the font at time that were distracting but it was great to be surrounded by them all as the baptism was done. I have a feeling my favorite part will be for my entire ministry introducing the child to the congregation and then being able to walk with him/her down the aisle as the people sing. There is something about the looks that child recieves that is so reassuring of who the people are that surround me.
On Friday, Bishop Mark Hanson was in our synod for the afternoon and spoke with the rostered leaders. Again, I was extremely impressed with his wisdom and ability to have me wonder if there is ever a time when you can discern whether he is preaching or speaking. He had amazing encouragement for each of us. He handled hecklers gracefully, yet was not afraid to say what he believed. He explained how leaders from other denominations see the ELCA as a church headed in a healthy direction--and I believed him.
He also had this amazing statistic. He stated that there were less than a handfull of nights when he lost sleep thinking about his job since he has been a bishop. He quoted a prayer of Pope John Paul II (or close to this)--dear God, I am your servant; it's your church; I'm tired; good night. You know I can match that in 80 or so days. I though that if he can handle his job surely I can muster up enough trust to get some sleep.
I got to have a short conversation with Mark as well. He was of course on his required schmoozing rounds, but I will remember meeting him and his boldness. He kept saying, "I am hopelessly a lutheran theologian." He kept talking about the paradoxes in the Lutheran tradition that are our strength. He is very well read, which is a wake up call to me to MAKE time. He talked about his time with Bill Smith and what an amazing man Bill is.
Tomorrow is back to work planning reformation services for the weekend. It will be fun to wear the gifted red stole I now have from my ordination. Paz

mark is indeed a gifted and gracious leader. hard sometimes for me to be in the presence of such people and not feel the law boring down on me, how i should be more gracious and more well read, etc...
but overall it is certainly grace that we have such good people in our leadership. certainly there are those "hecklers" out there. but i feel many of them are simply frusterated with their own issues and struggle with the reality that the church is changing and growing in different directions.
baptisms are great.
