Passing on the Faith
This morning I was reminded why I am so passionate about being intentional about passing on the faith to our beloved children. (It's the 'faith is caught more than it is taught' sort of thing)
During communion I was deeply moved to be intentional about praying for each person as I served them the bread. This happens to me occasionally, where I am drawn to deep. communion with God and others in the Lord's Supper.
Following a 'trip' around the altar I waited for the wine/juice server to finish and then I offered those at the table their blessing. As I was doing that I noticed a two year old handing out her Spree candy to each member of her family. I thought to myself jokingly, "there she is service communion her way to her family." By the way, Macy does not yet receive communion. I walked up to her Grandpa who was next to her and I said, "there she is serving her communion to you." He said without a pause, "Pastor Chad, that is absolutely what she is doing--she is copying you and giving all of us her candy."
She gets the community in communion and the sharing in communion. It is time to have a talk with her parents about getting her some bread! Interestingly enough, today was our Holden's first communion, if you will. He received a small piece of Mom's bread and a blessing. It was not planned, but it is not, in my mind, something to celebrate. He has joined us all in our solidarity with Jesus and with one another.
Though my sermon kind of bombed, I am thankful that the Spirit blew where it will, working in the midst of God's people. CK
